Secure Your Future — Kerala State Life Insurance (SLI) Scheme
Since 1976, the Kerala State Life Insurance (SLI) scheme has been a trusted insurance scheme for government employees and public sector institutions. This scheme offers a secure and reliable financial protection plan to government employees as well as employees of various public sector undertakings and government/aided educational institutions. Implemented under various government orders, the scheme provides insurance coverage from the very first day of service.
Why is SLI mandatory — and absolutely essential?
Started in 1976, this scheme has been mandatory for all employees entering government service from August 19, 1976 onwards. Initially applicable only to those below the age of 45, the age limit was later raised to 50 (vide GO (P) No. 1267/1999/Fin dated April 5, 1999).
As per GO(P) No. 556/08/Fin dated December 16, 2008, new entrants to service are required to apply within one month of joining. This ensures immediate protection and financial assurance for the employee’s family.
Freedom to choose and comprehensive protection
Since there is no maximum limit for the premium, employees can opt for additional policies for enhanced insurance coverage based on personal preference.
It is mandatory to take a new policy whenever the salary range increases in order to proportionately increase insurance coverage.
An employee can maintain one or more policies based on their individual needs for protection.
Expanded to more public sectors
Over the years, the SLI scheme has extended beyond government employees to include the following categories:
Panchayat employees (since 1992)
Employees of aided educational institutions and public sector employees (vide GO (P) No. 25/2004/Fin dated January 12, 2004)
Such expansions have allowed broader sections of public interest to benefit from the scheme and reflect the government’s commitment and responsibility toward public sector employees.
Easy monthly premium deduction system from salary
Your SLI premium is handled smoothly in the following ways:
Automatically deducted from salary every month
Subject to verification through your Drawing and Disbursing Officer (DDO)/Salary Disbursing Officer (SDO)
Credited to the government treasury account directly or through other deduction methods
However, to make the process more efficient, the department assures that through full computerisation of services, your premium details will always be accurately recorded, securely handled, and made accessible for your direct review.
Governed by strong legal framework
The scheme is implemented as per the following rules and government directions:
Kerala State Life Insurance Rules (GO (P) No. 840/88/Fin dated November 16, 1988)
Various government orders issued over the years, which clearly outline procedures regarding:
